A weekly look at what’s going on in the Centennial Conference:

Softball

Ursinus opened up the 2002 season with a 3-3 record, but one of its wins was against preseason No. 10 Roanoke. Franklin & Marshall started out 5-3, with two of its losses coming to Division II West Chester. Muhlenberg (6-2) was the only other CC team with more than two games under its belt.

Baseball

Franklin & Marshall (6-3), Johns Hopkins (4-2) and Western Maryland (2-1) joined Muhlenberg (7-5) as teams with winning records early on. F&M defeated defending MAC Commonwealth champ Elizabethtown, while Hopkins, ranked 21st in the ABCA preseason poll, suffered a 15-10 loss to No. 30 William Paterson. Western Maryland scored a 47-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln, posting 23 runs in the second inning alone ... Gettysburg (1-1) picked up its first win against 2001 NCAA participant Bridgewater State.

Women’s Lacrosse

Three CC teams are ranked in the top 15: Gettysburg (6), Ursinus (9) and Franklin & Marshall (15). In the first CC game of the 2002 season, F&M routed Haverford, 27-4. The Dips’ lone loss was by one goal to No. 10 Salisbury. Gettysburg is 2-0, including an 11-7 defeat of No. 11 Mary Washington.

Basketball

One of the teams to make the NCAA women’s semifinals, St. Lawrence, is scheduled to be in the Scotty Wood Tournament this November. King’s made it to the final eight before losing to Marymount. Wis.-Stevens Point and DePauw round out the “Final Four.” ... The men’s “Final Four” consists of Elizabethtown, Otterbein, Carthage and Rochester.

SOFTBALL PICKED TO REPEAT IN CC

The Muhlenberg College softball team has been picked to win its third straight Centennial Conference championship in the preseason poll of the league’s coaches.

The Mules received five of the nine first-place votes and 61 points to edge past defending regular-season champion Western Maryland (56 points). Muhlenberg swept three games in the first CC Tournament to win the title last year; in 2000, before there was a tournament, the Mules won with the best regular-season record.

In other CC polls, the Muhlenberg baseball team was picked to finish sixth after tying for fourth last year, and the women’s lacrosse team was tabbed for seventh place:
