Bob Frey hit his second home run of the game, and his sixth of the season, to straightaway center with one out in the top of the 11th to lift the Moravian baseball team to a 12-11 victory over Muhlenberg in a wild 3-hour, 35-minute marathon.

The Mules (8-7) were two outs away from a win, but the Greyhounds (5-6) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game. The win gave Moravian a 6-5 lead in the Matte Award standings for the 2001-02 year.

Muhlenberg took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on a two-out triple by sophomore Adam Sadler and an error, but Moravian took advantage of three Mule errors to score six runs in the fifth and open up an 8-4 margin.

Senior Mike Morris, who went 4-for-6, tripled and scored in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-5, then smacked a two-out, two-run double the following inning to give Muhlenberg a 9-8 lead. The Mules tacked on two runs in the eighth.

Freshman Gregg Burkhart allowed no earned runs and struck out five in 2.2 relief innings. He was in line to earn his first career win until Moravian’s ninth-inning rally.

Freshman Diana Bleakley made 18 saves and senior Teresa Lunardi scored four goals to lead the Muhlenberg lacrosse team to its first win of the

Bleakley’s work in goal enabled the Mules (1-2) to win despite getting outshot 27-24 by the Blue Jays (0-3), who are in their first season of varsity play.

Muhlenberg held a 6-3 lead at halftime, but Elizabethtown scored twice in the first two minutes of the second half to cut the margin to one. The Mules, whose first two losses had both been by one goal, allowed only two goals the rest of the way, pulling away for the win.

“After our double-overtime loss to Widener, we knew that we had to keep our focus for the whole game every time we went out to play,” said Lunardi. “Today was a good win, our first of the season, and all the girls played hard. We just have to have the same effort every time we step on the field.”

Junior Lynsey Caldwell scored two goals in the first half and classmate Sarah Bowman added a pair in the second.

The Mules begin a stretch of four Centennial Conference games in eight days on Thursday.
