BASEBALL FALLS IN NINTH
The Wilkes baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to hand Muhlenberg its second straight one-run loss, 5-4. The Mules (8-8) took a 4-2 lead into the last inning on the strength of six-hit pitching by senior Joshua Carter, but the Colonels (10-5-1) hit a two-run homer to tie the game and back-to-back doubles to win it. The first double came on a disputed play, as the Muhlenberg centerfielder appeared to have caught the ball. In addition to striking out seven in his eight innings, Carter went 2-for-5 with an RBI double. His bunt single keyed a seventh-inning rally in which Muhlenberg scored three runs on a balk, sacrifice fly and throwing error. |
MENS TENNIS WINS DELAYED OPENER
The Mules had been scheduled to open last Wednesday at Albright, but were rained out. Muhlenberg swept the doubles point with comfortable 8-2, 8-3 and 8-2 wins, then won in straight sets at second through sixth singles. Freshman Jeff Kraft (No. 4) dropped only one game in his singles match. Softball postponed: The scheduled softball doubleheader against local rival Moravian was postponed because of wet grounds at Patriots Park. No makeup det has been set yet. |
