The Muhlenberg softball team got its Centennial Conference season off to a rocky start, getting swept at Gettysburg, 3-0 and 1-0.

The Mules (8-8, 0-2), who are the two-time defending champions, managed only eight hits in the two games. They have scored only five runs in their last six games.

In the opener, Muhlenberg had a runner thrown at the plate in the third inning. Freshman Lisa Gerbino had two of the Mules’ four hits.

Sophomore Danielle DeLucia took a one-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh of the second game, but a walk, a single and an error brought home the game’s lone run.

The win was the first for the Mules (10-9, 1-1) against the Bears in 11 games, dating back to 1997. This is the earliest in a season Muhlenberg has reached double digits in wins since 1992.

Carter went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. He now has crossed home plate 120 times in his career, breaking the previous school record of 119 set by Chuck Draper (1997-2000).

Carter singled to lead off the fourth, stole second and came around on a base hit by senior Benjamin Leisawitz. He also singled to lead off the sixth, then stole second and scored on a single by junior Ben Carr. A single by senior Mike Morris plated Carr.

O’Connor allowed seven hits and two unearned runs to earn his third win. He was lifted in the eighth with the score 3-2 and runners on first and second. The first batter off junior Kevin Komeshok singled to right, but junior Justin Rubenstein fired a perfect one-hop throw to the plate to cut down the potential tying run.

“I figured he’d be going, so that’s why I came up throwing hard,” said Rubenstein. “It’s a game situation, and if my throw is off-line he scores.”

It was the team-leading fifth outfield assist of the season for Rubenstein, who went 0-for-4 in the game. “If I’m not doing well at the plate I try to contribute in other ways,” he noted. “Today it was with defense.”

Komeshok worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his CC-leading sixth save of the season.

Morris went 3-for-4 and had nine assists, one short of the school record for a shortstop.
