![]() A weekly look at whats going on in the Centennial Conference:
Western Maryland was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, suffering a 71-61 loss at Scranton, which went on to defeat Messiah to make it to the Sweet 16. Scranton is one of two Sweet 16 teams that Muhlenberg defeated this year; the other is Springfield. In the ECAC Tournament, Franklin & Marshall defeated Johns Hopkins, then upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley to reach the championship game. DeSales, which knocked out Swarthmore in the semifinals, won the title with a 79-68 overtime win. The CC had four 20-win teams in 2001-02: Muhlenberg (21-4), Western Maryland (22-7), Swarthmore (20-8) and F&M (20-7).
Gettysburg shot 8-for-43 from three-point range in dropping its NCAA first-round game to Lycoming, 78-59. Franklin & Marshall won the ECAC Tournament by defeating Lebanon Valley (71-59) and Kings (82-65). |
BASEBALL DROPS NIGHT GAME TO LEBANON VALLEY
The second career home run for junior Justin Graf, with one out in the eighth inning, was a case of too little too late as the Muhlenberg baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Lebanon Valley in a night game at Homestead, Fla. The Mules (3-4) trailed only 2-1 after six innings, but the Dutchmen (2-1)
The loss spoiled an excellent outing by senior Ryan White, who was making his third career start. After allowing a walk and a triple to the first two batters and hitting the third, the right-hander settled down to pitch out of the jam and give up only one unearned run in the rest of his six-inning stint. White struck out five. Muhlenberg scored its first run in the fourth when senior Joshua Carter reached on a fielders choice, stole second and third, and scored on a two-out single by senior Benjamin Leisawitz. Carter had three stolen bases in the game, while Leisawitz went 3-for-4. |
