The Muhlenberg softball team was two outs away from sweeping a
doubleheader today in Osceola, Fla., but undefeated Washington University
Muhlenberg broke a 1-1 tie by scoring four runs on three straight extra-base hits in the third inning of the Misericordia game: a two-run double by senior Elizabeth Kostelnick, an RBI double by senior Angela Tyson and a run-scoring triple by freshman Lisa Gerbino. Gerbino singled in a run in the fifth inning, which also saw a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Nicole Sarno. Gerbino finished 3-for-4 and started a double play in the seventh by catching a line drive. Tyson notched her third straight complete-game win, striking out seven and walking none. She has issued only one free pass while fanning 20 in 21 innings this season. With her two hits, Kostelnick moved into eighth place on the Mules all-time list with 111 for her career. In the second game, Muhlenberg took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-out, two-run double by junior Kelly Berg. That stood up until the seventh, when Washington strung together five singles to score four runs. It was the second time in three starts this year that sophomore Danielle DeLucia lost a shutout in the last inning. |
