MULES MISS SHARE OF MATTE BY TWO STROKES

The Muhlenberg men’s golf team finished in fourth place at the annual Lehigh Valley Championships, hosted by Lafayette at Northampton Country Club.

The Mules finished one stroke behind Moravian. They needed to defeat the Greyhounds in order to give Muhlenberg a share of the Matte Award for the 2001-02 school year. Moravian wins the trophy, which goes to the school with the better record in head-to-head competition in all sports, by a score of 9-7.

Senior Rich Jacobs led Muhlenberg, finishing ninth overall and first among Division III golfers, with an 82. Sophomore Matt Katz was one stroke behind.

SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH URSINUS
CC Tourney at Western Maryland

Danielle DeLucia Sophomore Danielle DeLucia (right) pitched a five-hitter for her second shutout of the season as Muhlenberg ended its regular season with a doubleheader split against Ursinus. The Bears won the first game, 3-1, but the Mules took the nightcap, 2-0.

The split, combined with Western Maryland’s sweep of Gettysburg, resulted in a three-way tie for second place in the Centennial Conference between Muhlenberg (21-13, 11-5), Gettysburg (21-11, 11-5) and Ursinus (19-16-1, 11-5). Western Maryland (24-6, 15-1) won its second straight regular-season title and will host the CC Tournament this weekend. The second through fourth seeds are Gettysburg, Ursinus and Muhlenberg, in that order.

The tournament begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. when Gettysburg takes on Ursinus. Muhlenberg and Western Maryland square off 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. The double-elimination tourney has two more games scheduled for Saturday and three (if necessary) on Sunday. Friday’s Mule Sports Daily will feature a tournament preview.

DeLucia struck out four in the second game to improve to 11-6 for the season. Senior Angela Tyson, who pitched a five-hitter in a losing effort in the opener, singled in the first run in the top of the fifth, then threw out a runner at home plate from center field in the bottom of the inning.

Junior Meghan Woods doubled to lead off the sixth and scored the Mules’ second run on a groundout by freshman Kadie Serfass.

Junior Kelly Berg had a pair of hits in each game. Click here for line scores.
