• Softball: The Muhlenberg softball team dropped a 13-8 decision to Misericordia in its 2003 season opener at the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Fla. The second scheduled game, against Thiel, was rained out.

Junior Jackie Maser went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the Mules’ 12-hit attack. Her two-run single in the top of the first helped Muhlenberg take an early 3-0 lead, but the Cougars took advantage of fielding misplays to score six runs in the second.

Freshmen Andrea Cohen and Tara DeMarzo both singled in their first career at-bats in the seventh inning.

• Baseball: Muhlenberg fell to 1-1 with a 24-14 loss to Becker in a marathon game at Homestead, Fla.

The Mules scored seven runs in the top of the eighth to cut a 19-7 deficit to 19-14, but the Hawks came back with five in the bottom of the frame.

Sophomore Matt Long began the big inning with a single and capped it with a three-run double. Freshman Brian LaRochelle, playing his first career game, had a two-run single in the eighth.

Senior Ben Carr led the 16-hit attack with three hits, and senior Justin Rubenstein scored three runs.

The Muhlenberg women finished in fifth place for their best showing since 1994.

Elson, the first Mule ever to win the honor, won two individual gold medals in the two-day event, capturing the 1,500 meters with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:55.66 and taking the

800 meters in 1:54.38. He also ran the anchor leg on the distance-medley relay team that finished first and was a part of two second-place relay teams, the 4x800 and the 4x400. Elson is only the second Muhlenberg athlete to win more than one event at the CC Championships, and the first to do it indoors.

Also earning gold medals on the second day were sophomore John Brodowski in the high jump and junior Frank Santini in the shot put. The five gold medals earned by the Mules topped their combined total (three) from the first nine CC Indoor Championships.

Muhlenberg scored an all-time high 130 points en route to its second straight second-place finish. Haverford won the title for the ninth time in 10 years.

The women scored 72 points to improve their standing from 2002 by two places. Two Mules won silver medals on the second day of competition: freshman Danielle Seiler in the 400 meters (with a school-record time of 59.97) and sophomore Kristin Boydston in the shot put. Seiler also ran on the 4x400-meter relay team that finished second and set a school record.

All four Muhlenberg women’s relay teams set school records during the meet. Junior Diana Garretto and freshman Kate Isselee were involved in three of the relay teams apiece.

Dickinson won the women’s title for the fifth consecutive year.
