Baseball Falls to DeSales in Last Home Game
The regionally ranked DeSales baseball team scored nine runs in the ninth to break an 8-8 tie and went on to defeat Muhlenberg, 17-11, in the regular-season finale for two teams headed to their conference playoffs. The Mules (19-12-1) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ben Carr, one of five seniors appearing at home for the last time, drove the ball over the left-field fence for his first career home run. After falling behind 3-2, Muhlenberg went ahead again in the third on back-to-back sacrifice flies by freshman Brian LaRochelle and sophomore C.J. Kessler. The Mules stayed on top until the eighth, when the Bulldogs (22-11) tied the score. Senior Justin Graf scored two runs in the game, tying the school record of 42 runs scored he set last year and becoming the third player in team history to score 100 runs in a career. Graf also stole three bases, bringing his season total to 40. Senior Justin Rubenstein had two hits, moving into a tie for third place on the programs all-time hits list with 142. He needs one more hit to become the first player in team history with 50 hits in back-to-back seasons. Sophomore Matt Long drove in two runs and tied the school record for doubles in a season (11). With todays 11, Muhlenberg broke the team record for runs scored in a season (251). The Mules will open the Centennial Conference playoffs Friday at McDaniel.
