FINAL TENNIS RANKINGS RELEASED

Muhlenberg is ninth in the Atlantic South Region in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III rankings of the year.

The Mules were 10-3 during the spring season, with their only losses coming to Swarthmore (fourth in the region and 18th nationally), Washington (eighth in the region) and New Jersey (13th in the Northeast Region). Muhlenberg earned wins against regionally ranked Salisbury (seventh; 38th nationally), Johns Hopkins (12th), Franklin & Marshall (14th) and Dickinson (16th).

In the individual singles rankings, junior Gena Ross, the Centennial Conference singles champion, is 16th, and freshman Amy Schmidt is 24th. The doubles team of Ross and junior Mackenzie Parke is rated 15th.

Two More Earn Academic Accolades

Two Muhlenberg athletes have been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District College Division Cross Country/Track & Field Team, chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. They join the four Mules who received similar recognition on the at-large team last week.

To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his or her team.

Both Muhlenberg representatives – senior Jason App and sophomore Christopher Martin – were second-team selections.

Jason App App, a computer science major, won the Centennial Conference outdoor championship in the pole vault in 2003. He finished in the top four in every outdoor meet in which he competed this spring and, during his career, placed in the top five at seven of the eight CC Championship (indoor and outdoor) meets. App holds the Mules’ indoor pole vault record of 14-1½.

Christopher MartinMartin, a chemistry major, ran sixth on the Muhlenberg cross country team that finished second at the CC Championships and fourth in the Mideast Regional. He placed eighth in the 1,500 meters at the CC Indoor Track Championships and was ninth in the steeplechase at the CC outdoor meet.
