BASEBALL DROPS PAIR OF MARATHONS

One day after having a game cancelled due to lack of equipment, the Muhlenberg baseball team made up for the lost contest by playing two games that lasted a total of almost seven hours.

Although both games came down to the final batter, the Mules were unable to get the big hit, and fell to Pitt-Bradford, 14-10, and Curry,

11-9, at the Clearwater Invitational.

In the first game, Muhlenberg (1-2) found itself in a 12-3 hole after Pitt-Bradford scored eight runs in the top of the seventh. The Mules chipped away, scoring three in the seventh, two in the eighth and two in the ninth to get the tying run to the plate with two out in the ninth. The game ended with a flyout to center, however.

Junior Aaron Regensburg went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, and senior Adam Sadler smacked a two-run single in the seventh. Junior Matthew Long was on base four times with two hits and two walks.

Despite taking the loss, junior Gregg Burkhart reached a career milestone when he struck out his 100th career batter in the third. He has 104 whiffs in 101 career innings.

Muhlenberg came back from a 4-0 deficit in the second game to take a 7-4 lead in the top of the eighth, only to have Curry scored seven runs with two out and nobody on in the bottom of the eighth. Down 11-8, the Mules loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but the final two batters grounded out and flied out.

Freshman Pete Oris, making his first career start, had a big game, driving in three runs with a pair of singles. His two-run single in the eighth gave Muhlenberg its first lead, at 6-4. Junior C.J. Kessler walked three times, scored two runs and stole a base.
