Championships at a stormy Williams College.

Brodowski scored 6,411 points in the decathlon, placing second, breaking his own Muhlenberg record by 67 points and moving up on the list of provisional qualifiers for the NCAA meet May 27-29. Entering this weekend, only seven Division III athletes, including two automatic qualifiers, had scored better than Brodowski now has. The athletes with the top 16 scores qualified for NCAAs a year ago.

With event wins in the high jump, discus and javelin, Brodowski finished 140 points shy of first. He finished in the top six in eight of the 10 decathlon events.

Sophomore Danielle Seiler placed in two events. She finished sixth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1:05.07.

The women’s 4x400 relay team also earned All-ECAC status by placing eighth in 4:05.94. Joining Seiler on the squad were senior Diana Garretto, junior Katie Macomber and freshman Lily Hatfield.

With more than 1,000 athletes on hand, the ECAC’s largest contingent ever, the Mules were fighting tough competition and Mother Nature. The meet’s final events, including the end of the decathlon and the 4x400, were delayed by a late afternoon thunderstorm.

The women’s 5,000 meters was stopped due to lightning and restarted almost two hours later, and sophomore Karen Mount placed 12th in 19:22.22. Senior Frank Santini finished 14th in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 2½ inches.

Before the lightning started, a few Mule freshmen participated in their first ECAC meet. Jacquelyn Inverso placed 16th with a triple jump of 35 feet, three inches. Steve Rothwell ran the 1,500 meters in 4:09.63, and Lex Mercado ran a 1:57.97 in the 800.
