Baseball Wins Home Opener
Mules Scratch Out Victory

A two-run single by freshman Joe Carlo capped a three-run rally in the seventh and proved to be the game-winning hit as the Muhlenberg baseball team won its home opener, 7-5 against Misericordia.

The Mules (5-3), who hit the ball hard all week in winning four of seven games in Arizona, had a different type of offensive attack against the Cougars (1-7-1). Muhlenberg managed only five singles, four of which were bloops or infield hits, but drew nine walks.

Down 2-0 entering the bottom of the third, the Mules pieced together two walks, three stolen bases and an infield single to score one run. Junior Matt Tobia then hit a flare off the end of his bat that fell in just behind second base, scoring two runs to give Muhlenberg the lead.

Misericordia came back to tie the game at 4-4 before the winning rally. With one out, the Mules loaded the bases on two walks sandwiched around a single by senior Matthew Long. Tobia was hit by a pitch to force in the go-ahead run, and Carlo followed by grounding a hard single through the drawn-in infield, plating two more runs.

Senior Pete Lankarge worked a 1-2-3 ninth to save the win for sophomore reliever Eric Wolfer. Senior Matthew Cooper did a superb job in his second start of the season, allowing only four hits and two earned runs while striking out six in six innings.

against Moravian in a game played at Lehigh.

Rebounding nicely from their first loss of the season, the Mules (3-1) took command late in the first quarter, scoring three goals in a span of 1:43 to extend a 1-0 lead to 4-0.

As it did in its first two wins, Muhlenberg put the game away in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals against the second-year-varsity Greyhounds (1-3). The Mules are outscoring their opponents 14-1 in the third period in their three wins.

Junior James Robinson notched his second hat trick of the season with three goals, and junior Brian Schimaneck netted two for the second game in a row.

Freshmen Mike Brown, Tim Martin and Brett Shaver each scored his first career goal.

Senior Bradley Lutzer led a defense that allowed only 16 shots with five ground balls. He also contributed to the offense by scoring the first goal of the game and adding an assist.

The win moved Muhlenberg a step closer to its second straight Matte Award. The Mules hold an 8-4 lead on Moravian with six events remaining in the school year.
