The Muhlenberg men’s tennis team won long matches and short matches and nearly everything in between en route to a 7-0 shutout of Albright in its home opener.

Junior Brad Gutwillig and freshman David Yaron both won their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively. It was the first career shutout for Gutwillig, who needed less than a half hour to win his match. Yaron has dropped only one game in his first two spring matches.

At No. 1 singles, senior Jeff Kraft won a third-set supertiebreaker to outlast a Lion opponent who defeated him in three sets last spring.

Senior Mitchell Reading won at both doubles and singles for the second match in a row to help the Mules (2-0) to their first shutout of Albright since 1970. Four of the last six matches between the two schools had been decided by the slimmest of margins, 4-3.

Junior Courtney Tapkas scored eight points – one off her career high – on six goals and two assists to lead the Muhlenberg women’s lacrosse team to a 17-5 win against Moravian.

The victory was the third in three days by a Mule team against the Greyhounds, enabling Muhlenberg to clinch a tie for its second straight Matte Award. ’Berg has a 9-4 lead with five events (baseball, softball, women’s and men’s track and field and men’s golf) remaining.

Tapkas controlled the opening draw, sprinted downfield and fired the ball into the net with just 14 seconds elapsed. She had her 21st career hat trick before the game was 10 minutes old.

“We knew it was important to get off to a good start,” said Tapkas. “We played a great game against Chestnut Hill [an 18-0 win Tuesday night] and we wanted to keep up the momentum.”

The Mules (2-1) led 6-0 before the Greyhounds (0-2) scored with 14:23 left in the first half for the first goal allowed by Muhlenberg in more than 75 minutes. After another Moravian goal cut the lead to 6-2, the Mules reeled off six straight goals in the last 8:06 of the first half.

Senior Christa Carlstrand scored 27 seconds into the second half for her fourth goal of the game. It was also her 100th career point, making her the 10th player in team history to reach the century mark. She finished with five goals and an assist.

Freshman Taylor Armstrong scored on all three of her shots for her first career hat trick, and junior Jessica Geiger matched her previous career total with three assists.
