The Muhlenberg womens tennis team closed out its dual-match season
with an 8-1 win at Ursinus.
The win was the ninth in a row for the Mules (12-3, 9-1), who tied a school record for wins in a season. The 2002 and 2004 teams also won 12 matches. Junior Amy Schmidt notched a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles to run her record to 15-0. She is the first Muhlenberg player ever to go through a dual-match season undefeated. The 15 wins a season broke the school record of 14 Schmidt set last year, and she also moved into sole possession of first place on the career singles wins list with 40. In her three seasons, Schmidt is 40-2 in dual matches. Schmidt and freshman Ashley Reed won comfortably at first doubles to finish with a perfect 13-0 record together, making them the first Mule doubles team to go through the duals undefeated (although three individuals had done it previously). Schmidt and Reed tied the school record for doubles wins in a season as a duo, and both broke the record for individual doubles wins in a season (14). For the first time this year, Muhlenberg had two players win by 6-0, 6-0 shutout sophomores Pam Kimmelman at No. 2 and Kelly Fraser at No. 5. Kimmelman finished 12-3 overall and 9-1 in CC dual matches, while Fraser ended up 12-2 and 8-1. Senior Emily Oster won at both doubles and singles, extending her school record for combined wins to 82, although Schmidt will begin next season just eight behind her. The teams lone senior, Oster led the Mules to a four-year record of 46-10, including a 36-4 mark in CC matches. |
