The team champions in tennis have already been decided, but individual championships are well within reach this weekend. Junior Amy Schmidt is the overwhelming favorite in singles for the women. The sixth-ranked player in the Atlantic South region, Schmidt has won 25 singles spring dual matches in a row and did not drop a set all season. She reached the finals in singles at the CC Individual Championships last year. Schmidts toughest competition should come from the seventh-ranked singles player from Swarthmore, and Washingtons 17th-ranked singles player, although the Mules No. 1 already defeated them both rather handily this season. Schmidt and freshman Ashley Reed should also be considered a favorite in the doubles draw. They were 13-0 as a doubles pair during the season, and became the first Muhlenberg doubles team to go through a dual-match season without a loss. Standing in their way could be Swarthmores fifth-ranked doubles pair, who were not teamed together when Muhlenberg and Swarthmore met in March. The other Muhlenberg doubles team competing, senior Emily Oster and sophomore Pam Kimmelman, are 8-2 against CC opponents in doubles and are on a six-match winning streak. Kimmelman also heads into the singles draw after she blanked her Ursinus opponent, 6-0, 6-0, on Tuesday. With losses in five of its last six matches to close the year, the mens team will hope to end its season on a high note. Seniors Jeff Kraft and Mitchell Reading and junior Brad Gutwillig will represent the Mules in singles after each winning four of eight conference singles matches. Kraft and Gutwillig advanced to the third round in the singles draw last year. |
