Sophomore Stephen Rothwell ran the second-fastest 800 meters in team history, winning the event at the Lehigh Games to highlight Muhlenberg’s final tuneup for next weekend’s Centennial Conference Championships.

Rothwell prevailed in a 49-man field whose only five Division III competitors were all from Muhlenberg. His time of 1:54.60 was just a second off the NCAA provisional standard.

Winds and rain played havoc with times and distances throughout the day, but junior Karen Mount (800 meters) and the women’s 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Jenna Lombardi, senior Katie Macomber, junior Danielle Seiler and senior Ashlie Hankee still managed to beat their own school records.

Senior Harry Kegelman won the pole vault, but with an asterisk: He had the fewest misses when the event was stopped due to the weather.

In a game that was equal everywhere but on the scoreboard, the Muhlenberg men’s lacrosse team closed out its season with a frustrating 14-1 loss at McDaniel.

Despite firing off 38 shots, only two fewer than the Green Terror (6-8, 3-5), and picking up three more ground balls, Muhlenberg (7-9, 0-8) could not find the cage until 4:22 remained in the fourth quarter.

Senior Bradley Lutzer closed out his career by picking up a game-high seven ground balls to finish with a team-leading 72 for the season. Sophomore Kyle Hart had five ground balls and scored the Mules’ lone goal.

The Muhlenberg men’s team is in seventh place after the first of three rounds of the Centennial Conference Championships. The women are third of three teams that finished the round. Play was suspended due to darkness, and Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall could not get a full 18 from all their players.

Schmidt, the top seed, defeated opponents from McDaniel and Gettysburg both by 6-0, 6-0. She has seven shutouts included in her perfect 18-0 record. Up next for Schmidt in one of Sunday’s semifinals is the third seed from Washington, whom she defeated 6-2, 6-4 last weekend in one of her closest matches of the year.

In the doubles draw, however, Schmidt and freshman Ashley Reed were upset in the semifinals, falling to a Swarthmore duo, 8-6, for their first loss of the season.

Sophomore Pam Kimmelman defeated the seventh seed in the singles tournament before getting eliminated in the quarterfinals.

In the men’s tournament, senior Jeff Kraft was defeated in a third-set supertiebreaker his first singles match, ending his career with a record of 89-54.
