Trailing 7-3 early in the third quarter, the Muhlenberg mens lacrosse team scored seven straight goals, then held off a late Montclair State rally to eke out its third win in a row, 10-9. Sophomores Kyle Farris and Mickey Norton combined for five of the seven goals, with Farris netting three for his third straight hat
The Red Hawks (4-4) took a 7-3 lead on a goal with 13:14 left in the third, then helped the Mules (3-2) get back in the game by committing penalties. Muhlenbergs next three goals came on extra-man opportunities, the third (Farris first) on a two-man advantage. Norton scored the first two man-up goals and assisted on the other. Their defense was pretty tough in the first half, but Coach did a good job moving people around in the third quarter until we got into better positions, said Norton. Once we scored the first few goals of the third, we gained confidence and rolled with it. Muhlenbergs roll continued when junior Sean Toohill scored with 6:24 left in the third to tie the score. Fifty-eight seconds later, freshman Brian ONeill put the Mules ahead with his first
Farris scored an unassisted goal with 42 seconds remaining in the third to make it 9-7 and capped the 7-0 run with a goal 1:36 into the fourth quarter. Montclair regrouped to break the run with 10:28 left. After killing off a Red Hawk extra-man opportunity, the Mules went into a stall with about five minutes left. They held the ball until committing a turnover at the two-minute mark, and Montclair scored with 1:26 on the clock to make it a one-goal game. The Red Hawks won the ensuing faceoff and took four shots in the last 67 seconds. Junior Daniel Kotch made a great save on a point-blank shot at his chest with 27 seconds left, and the last shot sailed wide, securing the win for the Mules. Senior James Robinson scored all three of Muhlenbergs first-half goals for his ninth career hat trick. Junior Christian Messler picked up a career-high seven ground balls, four as a faceoff wing. Kotch finished with 13 saves. |
