Men Drop Home Opener
A return home after opening the season with five straight road games wasnt enough for the Muhlenberg mens lacrosse team to score its first Centennial Conference win of the season. The Mules (4-2, 0-2) fell to seventh-ranked Gettysburg, 11-1. The Bullets (5-1, 1-1), who have the top goalie in Division III, took control early by scoring four goals in each of the first two quarters. Muhlenberg averted the shutout on an unusual goal with 8:35 left in the fourth quarter. After winning the faceoff following Gettysburgs final goal, the Mules passed the ball back to freshman goalie Andrew Bell, who moved up to near midfield before finding junior Kyle Farris open in the offensive end. Farris bounced in a shot to give Bell a rare goalies assist. Freshman Matthew Schroeder led Muhlenberg with five ground balls. |
WOMEN HANG TOUGH WITH URSINUS
The Ursinus womens lacrosse team scored the first three goals of the second half to break a 6-6 tie and went on to hand Muhlenberg its second straight Centennial Conference loss, 13-8. The Bears (4-1, 1-0), who received votes in the national Division III poll, ran off four straight goals midway through the first half to take a 6-4 lead. The Mules (5-2, 0-2) came back, tying the score when sophomore Ruth Morrongiello notched her 50th career goal on a free-position shot with 57 seconds left in the half. Ursinus looked to pull away with three scores in the first nine minutes of the second half, but again Muhlenberg fought back, drawing to within one on goals by freshman Amanda McGovern and senior Katie Reimann. The latter goal came with 11:02 left in the game and was the last the Mules would score. Sophomore Sara Hiller tallied three goals for her third hat trick in a row and her fourth of the season. |
