Two Win Places at ECAC Track

The Muhlenberg track and field teams wrapped up their indoor season (most likely) with two placewinners at the ECAC Championships.

Senior Lex Mercado finished sixth in the 800 meters, and sophomore David Chorney placed eighth in the mile. It was the third straight year placing at ECACs for Mercado, who won gold medals with relay teams the last two years and was seventh in the 800 in 2005.

Freshman Alex Faust is the only Mule who has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, but she ranks 17th on the Division III performance list and is a longshot to be selected. NCAA bids will be anounced on Monday.

For the second year in a row, senior Matt Loesch of the Muhlenberg wrestling team placed sixth at 197 pounds at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Loesch dropped a 12-6 decision in the semifinals to an unseeded wrestler from Buena Vista who knocked off the second, third and sixth seeds on his way to the final. It was the first loss of the season for Loesch, who took medical forfeits in his two consolation bouts.

Loesch ended his career with a record of 90-16. The winning percentage of .849 is the second-best in program history. By finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships in 2005 and sixth the last two years, he joined football player Joshua Carter (1998-2000) as the only three-year All-Americans in Muhlenberg athletic history.
