Three seniors, competing for the last time in their careers, were among
the nine Muhlenberg placewinners at the ECAC Outdoor Track & Field
Championships.
The Mule men tied for 17th with 19 points, while the women tied for 24th with 10 points. Stephen Rothwell and Lex Mercado, who spent four years close together on the Muhlenberg cross country and track teams, finished up that way, crossing the line consecutively in the 800 meters. Rothwell was fifth with a career-best time of 1:53.92, but missed the NCAA provisional standard by .72 seconds. Matthew Sallese was the other Mule senior to place, coming in seventh in the shot put. Sophomore Janette Adams posted the teams best finish of the meet, placing fourth in the 5,000 meters. Among others pointing to a bright future for the program were a pair of freshmen who scored points, Jeremiah Lachaud in the 100 and Debra Crockett in the shot put. Lachaud narrowly missed scoring in two events, placing ninth in the 200. The lone Muhlenberg athlete still competing is senior javelin thrower Sarah Mitchell, who did not participate in the ECAC meet. She has automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for next weekend at Wis.-Oshkosh.
