Men’s Golf Falls to Fifth; Women Tee Off

The Muhlenberg men’s golf team slipped to fifth place after the second round of the Centennial Conference Championships.

The Mules are 21 strokes behind front-running Franklin & Marshall heading into Sunday’s final round.

Senior Bill Snow posted the fourth-best score on the second day of competition, improving by eight strokes to 76. Sophomore Zachary Oyer leads Muhlenberg and is tied for fourth overall with a 36-hole total of 157.

The women’s golf team opened its season in the first round of the CC Championships. The Mules shot a 450, which ranks fifth out of five complete teams, 12 strokes behind Dickinson.

McDaniel and Gettysburg were six strokes apart, well ahead of the rest of the field, in the tournament hosted by Muhlenberg.

Junior Sarah Mellick shot a team-low 103.

teams enjoyed a rare day of beautiful, sunny weather at home, and they both enjoyed their final Centennial Conference matches of the season against Gettysburg.

The men kicked things off by edging the Bullets, 5-4, and the women followed with a 9-0 shutout.

In the men’s match, freshman Zach Adler won the two most important contests. He teamed up with classmate Jordan Rutt for a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles, sending the Mules into singles play with a 2-1 lead. At No. 2 singles, he came back from a set down to win in three sets, giving Muhlenberg its fifth point and the win.

Adler and Rutt finished 4-5 at No. 1 doubles in the tough CC. Rutt improved his team-best singles mark to 7-5 with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph at No. 3.

The women posted their third shutout of the season and clinched the third seed in next weekend’s CC playoffs at Johns Hopkins. The Mules will play Washington, which handed them their only loss in the last nine matches.

The key numbers were 8 and 2, as all three doubles teams won 8-2, and Muhlenberg finished CC play with an 8-2 mark for the third time in four years.

Seniors Jenn Powell and Carly Rotfeld finished their careers 29-11 in CC dual-meet competition. Rotfeld and sophomore Sara Sutker both went 9-1 in CC matches this season, while the No. 2 doubles team of Sutker and sophomore Caitie Druker also was 9-1.
