Women 4-0 For First Time Since 1975 |
Sophomore Susan Marchiano scored 22 points and sophomore Becky Richmond
recorded her second straight double-double to lead the Muhlenberg
With the win, the Mules set the school record for consecutive home victories (12) and improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1975. Two of Muhlenbergs four wins have come against teams that won a game in the NCAA Tournament last year. Elizabethtown reached the Sweet 16. The Mules jumped out to a quick 16-6 lead and led by at least five points the rest of the way. They forced 30 turnovers and outrebounded the Blue Jays, 48-32. After missing her first two shots, Marchiano made her next 10 field-goal attempts to surpass the 20-point mark for the second time. She also had nine rebounds and four steals. Richmond finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Lindsay St. Lawrence scored 10 points and hit two three-pointers to move into a tie for third place on the schools all-time list with 66 career treys. Junior Randi Baran had career highs of seven assists and four steals to go along with her six points. Sophomore Amber Nelson tied a career high with eight points. |
Senior Mark Lesko scored his 1,000th career point, helping the Muhlenberg
mens basketball team pull away late for a 64-57 win at University of
the Sciences.
Lesko entered the game needing 22 points to reach the milestone and finished with exactly 22.
After a defensive stop, junior Toomey Anderson fed classmate Anthony Strachan for a layup that turned into a three-point play. Senior Michael Barletta closed out the scoring by hitting a free throw after he blocked a shot. All told, the Mules (3-1) held USP scoreless for the final 1:35 of the game, scoring the final eight points. They also set a school record with 15 blocked shots, shattering the old mark of eight. Lesko and junior Aaron Holden swatted four shots apiece. The 30th member of Muhlenbergs 1,000-point club, Lesko also had nine rebounds. He is averaging 19.3 points and shooting 80 percent from the field this season. Strachan scored a season-high 11 points for the Mules. Click here for box score. |
