Seniors Joshua Carter and Erik Hammar of the Muhlenberg football team have been named to the ECAC Southwest All-Star Team.

Carter was selected as a return specialist for the third straight year. He averaged 24.1 yards on kickoff returns and 12.7 yards on punt returns and broke the all-time Division III marks for yards on kickoff returns (2,189) and punt returns (1,550). Carter is the first Mule football player ever to earn first-team All-ECAC honors three times.

Hammar (right) was a first-time honoree as a defensive back after recording seven interceptions in 2001. He set a Centennial Conference record by picking off four passes in one game against Hartwick. Hammar also recorded six pass breakups, 45 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Carter and Hammar also were both named to the Football Gazette All-South Region third team.

Muhlenberg finished the 2001 season with a 7-4 record, tied for its first Centennial Conference championship since 1986, and played in an ECAC championship game for the second straight year.

Forwards Dawn Iberer and Rebecca Armstrong of the Muhlenberg women’s soccer team have been to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Both players will now go on the ballot for All-America honors. The two first-team selections match the Mules’ previous all-time total. Muhlenberg was one of three schools (along with Messiah and Scranton) to place two members on the first team.

Iberer, a sophomore, led the Mules in scoring for the second consecutive year with 16 goals and 36 points. Ten of her goals were game-winners. A two-time first-team All-Centennial Conference selection, Iberer already ranks fourth in team history with 30 career goals.

Armstrong (above) was one of only two freshmen on the All-Region first team. She was second on the team with 26 points on nine goals and eight assists and also earned first-team All-Centennial honors.

Muhlenberg had its best season ever in 2001, going 19-3, setting school records for wins and consecutive wins (17) in a season, winning its second straight CC championship and reaching the regional final of the NCAA Tournament. The Mules were ranked 18th in Division III in the final poll of the season.
