HOOPS TEAMS SPLIT AT URSINUS
Men’s Winning Streak Snapped at 10
The Muhlenberg basketball teams split a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Ursinus. In the first game, the women rebounded from their first loss of the season to down the Bears, 69-55. The men rallied late to force overtime, but had their 10-game winning streak snapped with an 85-82 loss.
WOMEN

Junior Randi Baran scored a career-high 16 points as Muhlenberg (14-1, 6-1) pulled away from a stubborn Ursinus (5-11, 3-6) team.

The Mules led, 33-29, at halftime, but the Bears scored the first two baskets of the second half to tie the score. Back-to-back field goals by sophomore Susan Marchiano, one on a full-court steal and layup and one off a pass from Baran, gave Muhlenberg the lead for good a 37-33.

After Ursinus closed to within 37-35, freshman Gwen Doyle hit two three-pointers in a 10-3 run that extended the Mules’ lead to nine.

Marchiano finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth dounle-double of the season. She also had five of Muhlenberg’s 23 steals.

Doyle and sophomores Amber Nelson (eight rebounds) and Becky Richmond (seven rebounds) scored nine points apiece.

MEN

Muhlenberg trailed by 12 points, 69-57, with 5:25 left in regulation, but forced a tie by holding Ursinus to two free throws the rest of the way. In overtime, however, the Bears scored seven straight points early on and held on for the win.

The result left the Mules (13-4, 5-2) with a half-game lead over Ursinus (5-11, 4-2) in the CC East.

Senior Mark Lesko and junior Aaron Holden combined to score Muhlenberg’s final 12 points of regulation. Holden, who was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the second half, dropped in two foul shots with 53 seconds left to tie the game, then blocked a potential game-winning layup at the buzzer.

Lesko finished with 22 points and Holden had 17. Senior Michael Barletta scored 12 of his season-high 21 points in the first half. Junior Anthony Strachan had a solid all-around game with eight points, nine rebounds and six assists.
