A weekly look at what’s going on in the Centennial Conference:

Women’s Basketball
The East Division race is fairly simple: Muhlenberg needs to win its final two CC games to clinch first place and the top seed. Swarthmore can clinch by beating the Mules on Wednesday ... It’s more complicated in the West, with three teams still alive. F&M has road games against Dickinson and Johns Hopkins to close the season, while Hopkins travels to Western Maryland for a key game on Tuesday. The Green Terror finishes up at home, where it is 7-1 this season, against Washington on Saturday.

Men’s Basketball
Muhlenberg can clinch the East on Wednesday by winning at Swarthmore if Ursinus loses at Gettysburg, or by defeating Ursinus in Saturday’s regular-season finale ... Gettysburg holds the tiebreaker over F&M in the West if the two teams stay deadlocked. The Bullets travel to Dickinson for their finale on Saturday. F&M plays at Dickinson on Wednesday and then hosts Johns Hopkins on Saturday. Hopkins will look to stay alive at Western Maryland on Wednesday.

CC teams finished up their regular seasons over the weekend and will compete for the conference championship this Saturday at Ursinus. Mule Sports Daily will preview of the CC Championships later in the week. In one of the matches last weekend, Western Maryland lost a 25-19 decision to fourth-ranked King’s.

MULE WOMEN FALL IN REGIONAL SHOWDOWN

The Muhlenberg women’s basketball team shot just 26.2 percent and made only six second-half field goals as it dropped a 60-46 decision to

Sophomore Becky Richmond had a career-high seven steals to lead a Mule defensive effort that forced 27 King’s turnovers.
King’s in a showdown between the top two ranked teams in the region.

The Lady Monarchs (21-2) entered the game ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic Region and fourth in the d3hoops.com poll. The Mules (19-3), who had their 20-game homecourt winning streak snapped, were second in the region and 15th in Division III. The new polls that will come out tomorrow will not reflect the result of this game.

King’s took a 7-6 lead four minutes into the game and never trailed again. The Lady Monarchs held a nine-point lead, 25-16, with four minutes to go in the first half, but the Mules scored the final six points of the period to draw to within three.

The momentum did not carry through the intermission, however, as King’s quickly regained a nine-point lead. Muhlenberg cut the deficit to three on two occasions, the last coming at 44-41 with 8:27 to play, but made only one field goal the rest of the game.

The Mules’ final point total was 30 below their season average, and they made only one of 15 three-point attempts.

Sophomore Susan Marchiano scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Junior Randi Baran scored 11 points, while senior Lindsay St. Lawrence scored all eight of hers in the second half, including two three-point plays as Muhlenberg mounted its comeback effort.

The Mules’ last home loss was to Middlebury in the championship game of the 2000 Scotty Wood Tournament.
