Freshman John Brodowski became the first ECAC champion in Muhlenberg indoor track and field history by winning the pentathlon.

Brodowski, who scored a school-record 3,247 points, also is the first ECAC pentathlon champion, since this is the first year the event is being run.

Three other school records fell on the first day of the ECAC Championships, held at Tufts.

Freshman Ashlie Hankee lowered her school record in the 55-meter hurdles another six one-hundredths of a second to 8.73, which was good for 10th place. Hankee also ran the lead leg on the all-freshman 4x200-meter relay team, which crossed the line in a school-record time of 1:51.45.

The all-sophomore men’s distance-medley relay team clocked in at 10:31.22, lowering the school record by more than seven seconds. Both record-setting relay teams finished 14th.

The ECAC meet concludes Saturday with the Mules competing in four events.

The last Mule on the mats was senior Tyler Cathey at heavyweight. After dropping his opening bout to the eighth seed, Cathey advanced in the consolation bracket with a medical forfeit win against Bryan Steele of Ithaca. Cathey had scored a takedown and a four-point near-fall in just the first 38 seconds when Steele bumped his head, became disoriented and had to concede.

In his next consolation bout, Cathey faced second-seeded Jamie Salazar of Manchester, the 2001 national runner-up. The match was tied 4-4 coming down the stretch, but Salazar scored a takedown with 26 seconds left for what proved to be the winning points. After Cathey (11-2) escaped, Salazar took him down again and pinned him just before the final buzzer.

Senior Bill Holsinger’s come-from-behind victory in the first round of consolations highlighted the first session of the tournament.

Holsinger dropped his first bout at 149 pounds to Jim Morgan of co-host King’s, who also dealt him his only previous loss of the season. In the consolation round, he trailed third-seeded Mike Markovic of John Carroll 3-0 entering the third period and gave up a quick escape for a 4-0 deficit. Midway through the period, Holsinger took down Markovic to his back and rode him out the rest of the way, erasing his riding time deficit in the process for a 5-4 decision.

One win away from All-America status, Holsinger (29-3) fell to Tony Ganas of Wartburg, 8-2, to finish his outstanding career with a 118-28 record.

Junior Nate Yeasted (31-9) at 141 and senior Andrew Faust (19-5) at 165 were both eliminated in two bouts. Had he won his consolation bout, Yeasted would have been an All-American.
