Muhlenberg senior basketball players Randi Baran and Raushan Person have been named to the 2003 Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team.

Both were honored today at the second Lehigh Valley College Basketball Media Organization luncheon of the season. The Scholar-Athlete Team consists of one player who excels in the classroom and on the court from each of the seven schools in the Organization.

An art major and women’s studies minor, Baran has been the Mules’ starting point guard since the middle of her sophomore season. She is averaging 7.6 points per game this year with a team-leading 31 assists. Baran, who was named to the Naismith Classic All-Tournament Team earlier this month, also is third on the team with 11 three-pointers and fourth with 15 steals.

A communication major, Person is a reserve shooting guard who is averaging 3.4 points in eight games this season. All nine of his baskets have come from three-point range, including three for a career-high nine points in a 74-71 at King’s in December. Person also was a receiver on the Centennial Conference-champion Mule football team in the fall.

The Muhlenberg wrestling team built an 18-0 lead and hung on defeat Scranton, 27-15.

Two forfeits and decisions by senior Nate Yeasted (141) and freshman Dale Mills (149) gave the Mules (5-3) the big early lead. Yeasted’s win came against a previously undefeated opponent and was unusual in that he was on the bottom for the entire second period and finished with a riding time deficit of 1:21. Mills defeated the Royals’ leader in wins for his seventh consecutive victory.

But Scranton (1-6) won the next three bouts to creep to within 18-12. In a pivotal match at 184, senior Greg Jacobs held on to a 4-3 lead most of the third period before scoring a takedown in the final seconds for a 6-3 win, his third in a row.

After winning at 197, the Royals had a chance to tie the match with a pin at heavyweight, but junior Brendan Barrett made sure that wouldn’t happen. He took down his opponent five times in the first minute alone before pinning him 1:40 into the match.
