Sophomore guard Ryan Bonda of the Muhlenberg men’s basketball team has been named player of the week by the Centennial Conference after scoring 37 points in the Mules’ epic 108-101 double-overtime win at Widener on Saturday.

Bonda made seven of 10 three-point attempts and 13 of 21 shots overall. His three-pointer with 3.6 seconds left forced the second OT, where he scored six of ’Berg’s 11 points.

The 37 points were the most by a CC player this year and the most by a Muhlenberg player in a winning effort since Mike Gramer scored 40 in an overtime victory against Ursinus in 1995. No Mule had ever scored exactly 37 points in a game, as Bonda nearly doubled his previous career high of 19.

Also of note:

• The 108 points were the most scored by the Mules since a 109-47 win against Eastern Mennonite in the 1993 Scotty Wood Tournament. That was also the last time the team hit the century mark.

• The game marked the first time ever that the Mules gave up 100 points and won. There were three previous games in program history in which both teams hit the century mark: in 1966 at Upsala (lost, 117-102), in 1967 at Lycoming (lost, 125-101) and in 1992 at Drew (lost, 104-100 in overtime). The school record for combined points in a game is 227, set in a 138-89 loss to Valparaiso in 1968.

• The win was only the third for Muhlenberg in a multiple-overtime game. The Mules are 3-6 all-time in double overtime and 0-3 in triple overtime. Their last double-OT win had come in the 1985-86 season against Dickinson; their first came in the 1923-24 season against Lafayette. The score of that game was 27-25.

• Coincidentally, the Muhlenberg women’s basketball team has played three double-overtime games in its history, and two of them have come against Widener.

• After winning its game on Sunday, the Muhlenberg women’s team visited the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield. Two of the Hall of Fame members coached the Mules: Al “Doggie” Julian (1937-45), who coached Holy Cross to the 1947 NCAA championship and spent two years as head coach of the Boston Celtics, and Bennie Borgmann (1950-54), who played nearly 3,000 professional games and frequently scored 10 or more points at a time when most teams would rarely score 30 points in a game.
