Playing for the second consecutive night, the Muhlenberg men’s basketball team was held to a season low in points and suffered a 65-55 home loss to Misericordia.

The Cougars (4-2) broke open a 24-all tie by scoring the last four points of the first half and the first six of the second. The Mules (3-4), who shot 37.7 percent from the field, got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Senior Anthony Strachan logged his second double-double of the season with game highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds. He also recorded four steals to move into second place on the program’s all-time list with 143 for his career. Sophomore John Jemmott added 12 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Although 2,000-point scorer Willie Chandler led Misericordia with 14 points, he was held to 6-of-16 shooting and four first-half points by the Muhlenberg defense.

The Mules have off until Jan. 4, when they travel to Widener.

Women Nearly Duplicate Upset of Scranton

The Muhlenberg women’s basketball team led by four points at halftime but fell, 72-67, in its attempt to upset a top-10 Scranton team for the second consecutive year.

Last year, the Mules scored a 79-66 win when the Lady Royals were ranked ninth in Division III. Scranton (7-0) is ranked third this season.

Muhlenberg (3-3) had difficulty scoring down the stretch in a terrific game in which neither team led by more than five points until the final minute. The Mules took a 53-49 lead on a bucket by junior Jill Friedman with 9:27 left, but made only one field goal over the next 6:30 as the Lady Royals went on a 12-3 run to take command.

Junior Becky Richmond recorded her sixth career double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds, helping Muhlenberg to a 50-40 advantage on the boards. Junior Susan Marchiano scored 15 points, and senior Randi Baran added 10.

The Mules’ three losses are to the teams ranked third, eighth and 19th in the poll. They have off for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 4 against No. 13 Southern Maine.
