MULES TURN TABLES ON FORDS

Senior Toomey Anderson hit a jumper inside the lane with four seconds left to lift the Muhlenberg men’s basketball team to a thrilling 75-74 win at Haverford.

The victory avenged a home loss to the Fords (9-12, 4-6) earlier this season — by the same score. In that game, Haverford made the game-winning basket with 16 seconds on the clock.

This game did not appear headed for a similar ending when Muhlenberg (8-13, 2-8) opened up a big lead in the second half. The Mules took their largest lead of 17 points (66-49) on Anderson’s four-point play with 9:37 to play. But the Fords outscored Muhlenberg, 22-5, over the next eight minutes to tie the score at 71.

After the teams traded misses, senior Anthony Strachan gave the visitors a two-point lead with a fast-break layup off a pass from classmate Aaron Holden at the 40-second mark. Haverford came back down and hit a three-pointer with 12 ticks left to take a 74-73 lead.

On the next possession, Anderson pulled up in the lane, and his shot hit the front of the iron and rolled in. The Fords had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a turnaround jumper hit only the backboard.

Sophomore Ryan Bonda led the Mules with 18 points, and classmate Chase Licata came off the bench to score 13 points and tie a career high with eight rebounds. Holden finished with 14 points.
