DeVaney scored her previous career high of 11 points three times, including twice this season.
Sophomore Valerie Robuck became the 10th Mule to hit a three-pointer this year when she hit this one the first of her career to give Muhlenberg a 43-34 lead with two minutes left in the first half. |
Senior Erin DeVaney scored seven of her career-high 13 points in a
decisive first-half run as the Muhlenberg womens basketball team
improved to 6-0 with an 88-71 win against Amherst in the first round of
the Land of Magic Classic at Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Mules trailed for most of the first half and faced their biggest deficit at 27-20 when the Lady Jeffs (6-2) made a basket with 8:50 on the clock. Muhlenberg outscored Amherst, 26-9, the rest of the way to take a 10-point lead into the locker room. DeVaneys three with 6:21 to play tied the score at 31, and Susan Marchianos layup off a no-look, behind-the-back pass by Kristen Piscadlo put the Mules ahead to stay, 35-34, with 3:56 remaining. DeVaney scored 10 points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting in the first half and added a three-pointer early in the second. The Lady Jeffs, who came in allowing only 53.7 points per game, got as close as six points midway through the second half, but Muhlenberg was never seriously threatened. Marchiano also scored 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals. Senior Jill Friedman added 11 points, and sophomores Stephanie Coluccini and Tiffany Kirk recorded season bests with 11 and eight points, respectively. Senior Lindsay Tis recorded six of the Mules 22 steals, and sophomore Aril Bryant had four assists. |
