BASKETBALL TEAMS RANK AMONG STATISTICAL LEADERS
Both Muhlenberg basketball teams show up among the Division III statistical leaders through games of January 10. The women lead Division III in scoring at 90.0 points per game. The Mules are second among all NCAA womens basketball teams to Division II Cal State-Chico, at 94.7 ppg. Muhlenberg also is second in Division III with 10.5 three-pointers per game, trailing Grinnell (11.1), whose womens team has adopted the same style its mens team made famous. Senior Gwen Doyle (12th) and junior Kristen Piscadlo (39th) both rank in the top 40 in three-pointers per game. For the Mule mens squad, sophomore Jeff Stewart is 16th in blocked shots and 44th in rebounding. |
Two Pins Highlight Night for Wrestlers
The Muhlenberg wrestling team didnt have much to cheer about in its 40-12 home loss to Scranton. One of the reasons was the score, and the other was that the two bouts the Mules (2-5) won didnt last very long. Both sophomore Matt Loesch and freshman Joe Tartar scored first-period pins in their back-to-back matches at 197 and heavyweight. Loeschs pin, his fourth of the season, came in 1:42. He leads the team in wins with a 13-3 record. Tartar flattened his opponent in 2:23 for the eighth fall among his 10 wins. Tartar is just four away from tying the school record for pins by a freshman. Muhlenberg had to forfeit two weight classes and managed only one takedown in the remaining six contested bouts. |
