Three Footballers Named to All-Region Team

Three members of the Muhlenberg football team have been named to the All-South Region team by Don Hansen’s Weekly Football Gazette.

Senior outside linebacker Ryan Peer earned second-team honors. The Dan Walker Centennial Conference defensive player of the year led the Mules with 70 tackles and four forced fumbles. He also was second on the team in tackles for loss (17½) and sacks (9½) and blocked three kicks.

Muhlenberg’s other senior outside linebacker, Dan Walker, was selected to the third team. Walker (left) tied a school record with 10½ sacks and led the Mules with 19½ tackles for loss. He recorded 57 total tackles and added two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and an interception.

Peer and Walker led a defense that, despite giving up 31 points in an NCAA first-round loss to St. John Fisher, still is likely to finish the season ranked in the top five in Division III in four defensive categories. Through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, Muhlenberg was second in total defense, fourth in rushing defense and scoring defense and fifth in pass efficency defense.

The Mules are still in the running to win the statistical championship in total defense. Mt. Union, which plays Carthage in the national quarterfinals this weekend, has a slim 0.9 yards-per-game lead on Muhlenberg.

The third team member on the All-South Region squad is senior offensive tackle Frank Santini. A two-time unanimous All-CC selection and Academic All-District selection, Santini helped four different Mule running backs record 100-yard games in 2004.
