Jeff Stewart dunk

Stewart’s dunk was part of a 10-0 run that gave the Mules a 24-16 lead midway through the first half.

For the third straight game, the Muhlenberg men’s basketball team could not find the answers down the stretch and dropped its final contest of 2004, 71-66 at Christopher Newport.

The Captains (6-2) broke a 65-all tie on a jumper with 2:09 to play. Sophomore Justin Fields made one of two free throws with 1:54 left to cut the gap to one, but the Mules (5-4) would not score the rest of the game, missing two shots and turning the ball over twice.

As it did throughout the game, Muhlenberg played good defense down the stretch, as CNU’s final four points came on free throws in the final 1.4 seconds.

The Mules held the Captains to 36.4-percent shooting for the game and held a 42-31 advantage in rebounding, but committed 25 turnovers while forcing only nine.

Muhlenberg led by as many as 13 points (33-20) in the first half, when it shot 53.8 percent. Christopher Newport was within four at halftime and claimed the lead for the first time since early on with 6:23 left in the second half.

Sophomore Jeff Stewart had a big game off the bench, recording his seventh double-double with 23 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. He also blocked three shots.
