The Mules (13-11, 8-9), who led by as many as 14 points in the first half, faced their first deficit of the game when Litchfield made a layup with 32 seconds left to give the Red Devils (6-18, 4-13) a 70-69 lead. Muhlenberg regained the lead when senior Jimmy OBrien drove in for a layup and completed a conventional three-point play with 11 ticks on the clock. The loss was the Mules third on a last-second basket this season all in Centennial Conference road games. Despite the setback, Muhlenberg took over control of its playoff destiny, as Haverford lost to Ursinus, 88-61. The Mules and Fords are tied for the fifth and final playoff spot with one game remaining in the season. If Muhlenberg defeats regular-season champion Ursinus in Saturdays finale, it will land the last playoff spot regardless of how Haverford fares at Swarthmore. Even if the Mules had held on against Dickinson, they would have needed to beat Ursinus to ensure a playoff spot. The loss spoiled a spectacular performance by junior Jeff Stewart, who had 22 points, a career-high 19 rebounds and three blocks despite suffering an injury that limited his effectiveness in the second half. He finished the first half with 19 points and 11 rebounds. OBrien had 15 points and eight rebounds. |
