If the start of the season is any indication, it is shaping up as a good
year for the Muhlenberg track and field teams.
In the first running event of the year, junior Sara Gearin won the 3,000 meters, and in the first field event, freshman Alex Faust set a school record in the pole vault. All told, the Mules had one ECAC qualifier, four first-place finishers and six mens and seven womens performances that earned spots on the all-time top-10 lists. Junior Dan Steinhart won the 400 meters, coming from behind on the backstretch to overtake a Kutztown runner. His time of 51.86 was just four one-hundredths of a second off his personal best. Freshman Jeremiah Lachaud qualified for the final in the 55-meter dash, finishing fourth in 6.89 seconds the seventh-fastest time in team history. Also making an impressive debut was Debra Crockett, whose shot put of 35-8¾ in her first career meet was within a foot of the school record. In addition to winning the 3,000 by more than 20 seconds, Gearin anchored the 4x800-meter relay team that finished first. |
Faust (top) also won the 400 meters with the fifth-fastest time in
team history.
Her pole vault of 10-0 qualified for ECACs and broke the previous school
record of 9-10¾.
Junior Erika Koop (bottom) placed second in the triple jump, fifth
in the high jump
and eighth in the long jump.
