Women’s Basketball Snowed by Dickinson D

The Muhlenberg women’s basketball team could have used a snowplow to penetrate the Dickinson defense.

On the night of the first snowstorm of the year, the Red Devils gave a good indication of why they rank fourth in Division III in scoring defense, forcing 24 turnovers in a 50-42 win. In its season sweep of the Mules, Dickinson allowed a total of only 76 points.

The loss dropped Muhlenberg (19-5, 12-5) into a tie for third place in the Centennial Conference with one game to play. The Mules are tied with Gettysburg, a 55-46 victor at Johns Hopkins, and own a tiebreaker over the Bullets because of their road win. Muhlenberg can clinch a first-round bye in the playoffs with a win at Ursinus in Saturday’s regular-season finale.

Dickinson (20-4, 14-3) went on a 10-0 run to take an 18-11 lead with 5:58 left in the first, but the Mules responded by scoring the next seven points to tie the score. The game was tight the rest of the way, neither team leading by more than six points until the very end.

Senior Emily Wright, playing in her last scheduled home game, hit her fourth three-pointer (in five attempts) to bring Muhlenberg to within a point (34-33) at the 10-minute mark. The Mules cut the margin to one three more times, the last when sophomore Lauren Boyle beat the shot clock with three minutes left.

The Red Devils completed a three-point play on their next possession, and Muhlenberg managed just one free throw the rest of the game.

Boyle scored a team-high 17 points, while Wright finished with 12. Sophomore Erin McSherry set a career high in rebounds for the second game in a row, hauling in 13.

The Mule defense, which came in 27th in Division III in field-goal percentage defense, held Dickinson to 30.6-percent shooting.
