New National Anti-Hazing Hotline
Recognizing the negative impact hazing has on all
of Greek life, 20 international fraternities and
sororities have joined together to establish a
national Anti-Hazing Hotline. The toll-free number,
1-888-NOT-HAZE is available to those who think they,
or students they know, have been or may be victims
of hazing. Callers may remain anonymous or
provide personal information so that they may be
responded to directly. The law firm of Manley Burke
will forward copies of messages to the appropriate
national organizations along with the relevant
hazing laws for that jurisdiction. Muhlenberg
College students, faculty and staff are encouraged
to use this resource, along with the local and
campus resources, if they suspect that hazing is
occurring within the Greek system.

Girls Fight Back!
The Muhlenberg Panhellenic Council and the Office
of Greek Affairs invites all first-year women to
attend "Girls Fight Back!" on Tuesday,
October 23 at 7:00 p.m. in Moyer Hall Miller Forum.
"Girls Fight Back is an empowering
and motivational personal safety program for women
of all ages. GFB uses a unique approach in teaching
women about personal security and self-defense. We
use empowerment instead of fear, and simple
techniques instead of complicated moves. The
program is delivered in a fun, practical and
down-to-earth approach to safety. We work with the
social needs of today’s young woman, and we do our
best to make it “cool” to set boundaries, stick up
for yourself and fight back if necessary. We find
this approach is more effective and empowering in
motivating women to make safe choices in their daily
life."(from the GFB website) You can preview some
of the program here:
Sigma Phi Epsilon
and TAKE Defense
The Grand Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon adopted TAKE
Defense and the Ali Kemp Foundation as a national
service learning/philanthropy initiative. TAKE joins
YouthAIDS as a second national SigEp philanthropic
partner. While YouthAIDS focuses on raising money to
combat AIDS in youth and children, TAKE Defense
offers programming for chapter to provide
self-defense training and awareness to women on
chapter campuses. Chapters will be receiving
information about this program directly from the Ali
Kemp Foundation (www.TAKEdefense.org).
Ali Kemp was a
member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority at Kansas State
University and girlfriend of the SigEp Chapter
President at the University of Kansas. Her father,
Roger Kemp, is a SigEp alumnus from the Central
Missouri State Chapter (Missouri Theta, ’70) and her
brother, Tyler, is currently an undergraduate in the
Kansas Gamma Chapter. Ali was brutally assaulted and
murdered while working at a summer swimming pool job
in Kansas City in 2002. The SigEps in Kansas teamed
up with the Kemp Foundation to provide defense
training to combat physical and sexual assaults on
more than 350,000 women college students every year. |
