What is Alpha Phi Omega?
Alpha Phi Omega is a Co-ed National Service Fraternity that was founded and maintained on the principles of Leadership, Friendship, and Service. Muhlenberg College's Xi Alpha Chapter currently consists of over 40 active members.
Leadership
"Leadership is practiced not so much in words, as in attitude and in actions"
One of the principles of Alpha Phi Omega is to teach its members that everyone has the ability to develop themselves into whatever they seek to be. Everyone has the opportunity to become a leader in the Fraternity, whether it is an executive board member or a committee chair. Many members are converted from followers to leaders by accepting these leadership responsibilities.
Friendship
"You can make more friends in two months helping people than you can in two years trying to get others to help you."
Another principle that is strengthened through active involvement in Alpha Phi Omega is friendship. APO encourages its members to become better friends with the other Brothers, and to extend that kindness to everyone they encounter outside of the Fraternity.
The Xi Alpha chapter has a fellowship event almost every Friday or Saturday night that is planned by our VP of Fellowship. These events include bowling, watching movies, or ice-skating. A weekly Brotherhood dinner is also held where the Brothers meet at a certain time and place to have dinner together. APO also holds an annual Spring Semi-Formal that is always a lot of fun. These events are not mandatory to be an active Brother, but members are encouraged to attend to build stronger friendships.
Service
"Only a life lived for others is worth living"
Alpha Phi Omega participates in four types of service. They are:
- Service to the College
- Service to the Community
- Service to the Fraternity
- Service to the Nation as participating citizens
