The Mules Prevail Over Kutztown November 21 2008 |
|
The Mules played an inspired game against Kutztown to remain undefeated in League play. Freshman Andrew Milanesi had a four point night, including a hat trick, to lead the Mules. Freshman Cody McKinney, Freshman Kit Mathers, and Senior Assistant Captain Geoff Kelleman also netted tallies. Mathers, Milanesi, Senior Assistant Captain Craig Marone (with two), and Senior Captain Robbie Janowitz had assists.
This was a night for penalties and power play goals. ‘Berg had four extra man goals and a beautiful shortie by Milanesi.
Junior net minder David Emerson played superbly, allowing his teammates to take home the win.
The game ended with a “skirmish” after the final whistle. A Kutztown player shot the puck into the stands, with a commensurate reaction from the Muhlenberg players. The result finally ended the almost four hour marathon (due to zamboni breakdowns and waiting for the repair of broken glass) with ‘Berg enjoying a 6-3 victory.

The Mules Travel to Rutgers for a Sunday Night Encounter November 16 2008 |
|
The first visit to new league team, Rutgers, proved very hospitable. There actually is a rink colder than ours! ‘Berg proved too much for the Rutgers team. The Mules’ defense continued to play solidly, giving up only one goal; the penalty killing units gave up only one goal in twenty-four attempts over the last three games.
Andrew Milanesi and Geoff Kelleman each had a pair of goals and Kit Mathers tallied one. David Emerson stood tall between the pipes. The Mules skated off the ice with the 5-1 win to go 3-0 in League play.

Mulenberg Sends Bucknell Back to Lewisburg with a Loss November 14 2008 |
|
The power play clicked against Bucknell, with two goals by Freshman Andrew Milanesi out of the Mules' three chances. With an additional goal, Milanesi had a hat trick before the end of the second period. Assists on Milanesi’s goals went to Senior Geoff Kelleman, Sophomore Will Behrns, and two to Senior Robbie Janowitz. Kelleman also assisted on Freshman Cody McKinney’s goal.
The penalty killing units played very strong positional defense, not allowing a goal although being short handed for more than half the second period.
Kelleman added one more goal, with Freshman Kit Mathers assisting. On a hard working play, Senior Brad Zatcoff made a beautiful pass from behind the net to waiting Sophomore Chris Maher, who put it behind the Bucknell goalie to complete the scoring for ‘Berg.
However, the night belonged to Junior Goalie David Gardner. Gardner got the start and played wonderfully. On the way to the victory, he made solid, and some spectacular, saves that allowed his teammates to skate off their Lehigh Rink with the win.

Momentum shifted toward ESU during the second period, especially when they scored midway through to close the gap to one goal. ESU scored at the beginning of the third period, and although being outshot in the third period, ‘Berg managed to take the win with an empty net goal by Cody McKinney.

TCNJ Returns to the Lehigh Valley October 24 2008 |

The Preseason Continued On October 4th and 5th October 2008 |
|
The preseason continued on Saturday and Sunday, October 4th and 5th. The Mules played two good teams, with the same result in each.
Seton Hall dominated the Mules in their first trip to New Jersey this season by a final score of 13-3. Two pretty power play goals were recorded by Andrew Milanesi and Robbie Janowitz, each assisting on the others. Milanesi also recorded an even strength tally. Additional assists went to Will Behrns and Cody McKinney. David Gardner and Ron Clark split the net minding duties.
Sunday began with a beautiful performance of our National Anthem by The Chaimonics. The Sunday contest saw Goalie David Emerson stop wave after wave of Penn State players. He managed to stop a significant number of shots, showing his outstanding goalie prowess, but Muhlenberg was shut out 11-0.
A much needed rest, with fall break the weekend of October 10-12, will allow the Mules to return to the ice with a two game set with neighbor Lafayette on the 17th and 18th.

5th Alumni Game Produces Endless Smiles and Lots of Goals September 27 2008 |
|
The 2008 version of the Annual Alumni Game was attended by players of past seasons and faculty members, joined by the seniors playing against the freshman, sophomores, and juniors.
The game was like pond hockey with your friends. The only thing missing was a frosty cold night with snow falling. It was back and forth the entire game, with the victory going to the alumni-seniors on a shootout goal by Brad Zatcoff .
The result was secondary to the rekindling of wonderful memories. Smiles and laughs were seen all over the ice and a definite successful event was enjoyed by all.

'Berg Begins the 2008 - 2009 Season September 26 2008 |
|
It’s been over six months since the Mules skated in the playoffs and the team taking the ice was a welcome sight for hockey fans. The rink was filled with enthusiastic and loud supporters camped out along the railing of the balcony.
The team has a different look this year with senior Robbie Janowitz wearing the captain “C” and seniors Geoff Kelleman, Craig Marone, and Brad Zatcoff wearing the assistant “A”s.
The Mules came out after warm-up and were badly out shot and out scored, finding themselves down 3-0 at the first intermission. The second period was entirely different, with goals by Chris Maher, Kit Mathers, and two by Jon Lyons. Evan Schneider assisted on both Lyons goals with helpers going to Craig Marone, Cody McKinney, and Alex Lieberman. Unfortunately the third period was much like the first with ‘Berg finding itself on the losing end 5-4. This was the first game, after several weeks of practice, and much can be learned from this pre-league match-up.
The tune-ups for League play continue next week with Muhlenberg traveling to New Jersey to play Seton Hall.

Muhlenberg Ice Hockey Club Continues to Grow May 2008 |
|
Over the past two years, the Muhlenberg College Ice Hockey Club has seen considerable growth. During its 2006-2007 season, the club won the inaugural championship in the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference (GNCHC) with a team of 18 players. This past season, the club made it to the GNCHC semi-finals as the team grew to 27 players. Although the club did not win the conference championship, it finished with an overall winning record while playing a very competitive schedule. For the first time in its history, the club played against Penn State and the University of Vermont in non-league competition.
This coming season, Head Coach Ken Latteman expects to see continued growth in the club's numbers. He recently announced that in addition to its GNCHC schedule, the club will play a competitive non-league schedule that will include games against Seton Hall University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Penn State. The club has some additional ice time available that Coach Latteman is seeking to fill. If any team would be interested in playing, please feel free to contact him at klatteman@muhlenberg.edu.
If you are a student seeking a great educational experience while playing competitive ice hockey in front of the largest fan base in the GNCHC, please contact Coach Latteman at klatteman@muhlenberg.edu to make your interest known. He will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding the college and the team.
