Mules meet “Wounded Warriors”
How many times have you heard someone say, we wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for the men and women serving our country? The Muhlenberg College Ice Hockey Team, support personnel and coaching staff along with the President and Commissioner of the “Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference” went to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to visit with our “wounded warriors”, combat veterans. Many of our combat veterans have been injured while being in Iraq or Afghanistan. Although they have fought hard to recover, tasks that we take for granted are now things they must fight to achieve. What touched one of our team players was that many of the veterans we saw are the same age as the members of the team.We handed out commemorative t-shirts, steel thermos bottles and lapel pins as a small token of appreciation for their service to our country and to have the honor of meeting them. Words cannot really describe the observations and thoughts that will be with all of us forever. As we drove away from the Medical Center, Coach Ken said,” I feel guilty leaving them.”
Following our visit with our “wounded warriors” we proceeded to the United States Naval Academy where everyone was treated to a guided tour of the Naval Academy. Following the tour, everyone met at the Dry-dock for supper followed by a short trip to the McMullen ($16.5 million) sports complex where our Mules were hosted by the United States Navy (D-1) hockey team. There were no losers on this day; just a lot of fond memories. Our team left the Navy team with an American Flag lapel pin for each of the Navy players and their support staff. We thanked them for their service to our country and stood behind the Navy team on the ice as the Navy Alma Mater was played following the game.
I would like to thank the following people who supported this wonderful day:
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne McWilliams. Mr. and Mrs. Horenbein. Phillipsburg Area Veterans. President Helm, Muhlenberg College.Professor Will Gryc, Team Advisor. Bob Faro, Vietnam Veteran, Father of a “wounded warrior, combat veteran, Afghanistan. HM2 Katie Benton, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. ALL of the parents who supported the team with food/beverage and your presence at the Naval Academy.
Respectfully Submitted,
Coach Bill Nixon
