One Muhlenberg student's thoughts to share...
The IMPACT Project
This
is my forth semester participating as a mentor in the Impact
Program. When I first started it I was
unsure
what to
expect, as the high school students may be
shy and uncomfortable being around older college students. I
found that the program ran very smoothly, and
after having a great experience with my first "mentee" I
decided to continue. There are two major reasons that I come
back to be a mentor each semester, the first being most
important. Although it is often hard to see, it has become
clear to me that the students look forward to their Thursday
afternoon on a college campus. They have someone to talk to
that they know will listen, and I have the same. The second
reason is simply because it's fun. I am able to unwind, be
myself and spend a couple of hours each week with a new
friend. We play basketball, go over homework, do a unique
activity with the entire group and have dinner together.
There is always a lot of laughter, as well as good
conversation. The time flies....not only through each day,
but through the entire semester and though I wish I could
follow up with the students to see their progress, in some
way I know that I have made an impact regardless of whether
or not I ever see or talk to them again. Though I
participate in attempt to make a local high school student
happy for only a few hours a week, little do they know, they
have quite an impact on me, as well.
