Marsha R. Baar
Professor of Chemistry
Trumbower Room 304
(484) 664-3264
Background
B.S., State University of New York at Stony Brook
Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Marsha Baar's research involves the synthesis and characterization of a novel class of compound in which cryptands, three-dimensional cage molecules, are attached to fluorescing coumarins. This fluorescent portion of the molecule should enable the quantitative detection of the coumarocryptand and the host coumarocryptate. Dr. Baar is synthesizing a coumarocryptand that will selectively bind the heavy metal Pb2+. The compound could have potential clinical use in the detection of lead levels in blood.
