Team Teaching

The Team-Teaching Experience

Muhlenberg College values interdisciplinary efforts. Our grants officer helped us successfully apply for a National Science Foundation grant to support course development, acquisition of materials, and dissemination. Our challenges, therefore, were not institutional issues. We sensed that our relationship in the classroom might be the single most important factor in the successful outcome of the course. We knew our teaching styles were different, so we observed each other’s classes to see how we could adapt to teaching together. We also wondered how to divide the material between us and eventually took the most logical course – our presentations to our students were in our own areas of expertise. Both of us worked to link the materials to the other’s discipline. (Incidentally, the grant application process was an effective “training ground” for team-teaching. As we developed our proposal, we brainstormed and exchanged ideas and discovered our complementary strengths.)
