"There is an African proverb that says, ‘You cannot know the bugs of the bed you haven’t slept in, nor where the roof leaks in a house where you have never lived.’

A liberal arts education and opportunities like service- learning pull us beyond our preferred comfort zones – comfort zones of race, class, ethnicity, ideas and more. They give space to check out “bugs and roof leaks” sometimes intimately through contact with persons who live out the key issues of our day and sometimes in a more analytical way than we might otherwise encounter. They provide opportunities and an invitation to define as neighbor one whom we might otherwise choose to pass by."
