Alum gives boost to educational outreach

Thanks to the generosity of a 'Berg alum, two outreach programs for public school children - the College's 2002 Summer Science Camp program and its Writing Academy - will split a $20,211 gift. Photo of Citizen's National Bank contribution

The funds were provided by Citizen's National Bank under a new Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) initiative. Thomas Oleksa '75 is president and CEO for Citizen's National Bank.

"While I was thrilled to receive notice of this gift, I was even more delighted to hear that one of Muhlenberg's alumni made this happen," says Deb Kipp, assistant vice president of development.

The science camp, directed by Dr. Bruce Anderson, will bring up to 20 promising high school students to campus for a week of intense, scientific discovery. Muhlenberg's new Writing Academy, under the supervision of Linda Miller, brings renowned writers to the public schools for advanced reading, writing and related literature activities.

Muhlenberg is proud to partner with Citizen's National Bank on the state's new Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program, which authorizes the award of tax credits to businesses that make contributions to educational improvement initiatives that meet DCED guidelines. For more information, please contact Muhlenberg's Development Office at (484) 664-3223 or log on to the DCED Web site at www.inventpa.com.

Linda Miller and Bruce Anderson happily accept the Citizen's National Bank contribution presented by David Druckenmiller (center), Allentown representative of the bank.

Alumni Relations office welcomes new assistant director

Lauren Mohn was named assistant director of alumni relations as of December 1, 2001. She comes to Muhlenberg from Signature Marketing Group of Langhorne, Pa., where she was a corporate event planner. At Signature, Mohn managed all aspects of pre-, on-site and post-event planning for corporate events.

Mohn received her bachelor of arts degree in public relations and advertising with honors and highest distinction from Penn State University in 2000. Her published senior honors thesis is titled "Planning and Executing Special Events to Improve Public Relations for Philanthropic Organizations."

As an undergraduate, Mohn assisted in the management of the nation's largest student-run philanthropy, a 48-hour dance marathon at Penn State, which raised more than $3 million for pediatric cancer.

"Lauren's energy, creative synergy and tremendous understanding of constituency relations will be an asset to her work and to the College," says Jennifer Tran, assistant vice president for development and director of alumni relations.

"I am excited and honored to work for Muhlenberg and I hope that my efforts will make a lasting impact on the Muhlenberg community," says Mohn. Mohn resides in Quakertown, Pa., with her husband, Matthew.
