In a neighborhood

regional
alumni clubs

It starts with a chance meeting of two people – one wearing a Muhlenberg sweatshirt, the other a keen observer. The observer asks, “Did you go to Muhlenberg?” and the “sweatshirt” answers, “Why yes I did.” Within minutes the two are sharing Muhlenberg memories, and before long they’re laughing and joking like old friends.

The two go their separate ways, each one thinking, “I wonder if there are many other Muhlenberg alumni in this area?” The next week the Alumni Office receives a call from the “sweatshirt” inquiring about the possibility of starting a regional alumni club.

“Muhlenberg alumni are like kindred spirits,” says Lauren Shanahan, director of alumni relations. “I see it happen at alumni events all the time. People walk into an event knowing no one, and they leave with new friends.”

In many regions across the country, these chance meetings are evolving into alumni clubs. Regional alumni clubs work with the Alumni Office to plan activities that keep alumni connected.

“It helps to have such dedicated volunteers helping plan events in their region,” says Shanahan. “After all, they know the places to go and they know the special events that are happening in their cities.”

With alumni in all 50 states, there may be an alumnus in your neighborhood. To find out more about starting a regional alumni club in your area, contact Lauren Shanahan at shanahan@muhlenberg.edu.
