…Close to Home
When the New York and Philadelphia Regional Alumni
Clubs took on community service initiatives in their area, they hoped
they could find a way for Muhlenberg alumni to make a difference close
to home…but
they never expected to have such an incredible impact.
In October,
a team of 28 alumni from the New York metro area joined forces to make
a difference at PS 189 in Manhattan during New York Cares Day. The
team, organized by club leaders Matt Daly ’98
and Diane Mammon ’88, had a ton of fun and did a great job at
the school. In fact, the principal was so happy with their work that
she invited the team back to help with a spring clean up as well! The
New York team also raised several hundred dollars in the College’s
name
in support of the
New York Cares Day operation.
Not two months later the Philadelphia
Alumni Club, led by Dawn Hanson ’00,
organized a holiday community service event in conjunction with the
Philadelphia Society for Services to Children. There, more than 25
alumni came together to help organize, wrap and distribute gifts to
needy families in the Philadelphia area. Still other alumni donated
gifts and contributed more than $200 in support of the cause – and
in addition, three alumni sponsored entire families to help make their
holidays special. “You can’t put a price tag on what Muhlenberg
has done for us,” said Laurie Haines, the Society’s director. “Without
their help it would take us days to get the work done. We really appreciate
all of their help…and so do the families
we serve.”
“Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with
your community and re-connect with your old friends from Muhlenberg,” said
Sherry Fazio ’99, senior development officer for New York Cares. “It’s
great to meet up with friends from school and know that you’re
all there making a difference in the spirit of Muhlenberg alumni.”
