Muhlenberg College alumnus Leonard Zon, MD ('79),  Grousbeck Professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, published a description of a model for melanoma in the leading journal Science. The accomplishment was the subject of numerous mainstream news articles, including The New York Times.

Biology

The Biology Department remembers Dr. David Much who gave 33 years of his life to teaching and research at Muhlenberg College. David passed away on May 12, 2014 at the age of 70. He was remembered by Dr. Marten Edwards in a speech given at the annual Faculty-Staff Dinner at Muhlenberg College: David Much Remembered.

At the May 2014 graduation ceremonies, Dr. Amy Hark, Associate Professor of Biology, was awarded the Paul C. Empie '29 Memorial Award for Excellence In Teaching.

Dr. Richard Niesenbaum, Professor of Biology, was awarded the Class of '32 Research Award for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Dr. Jeremy Teissere, Associate Professor of Biology and Neuroscience, was named Stanley Road Endowed Chair in Neuroscience.

At the May 2011 graduation ceremonies, Dr. Amy Hark, Associate Professor of Biology, was awarded the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in recognition of her contributions to the intellectual growth of students.

Dr. Daniel Klem, Acopian Professor of Ornithology and Conservation Biology, was awarded the 2010 Rosalie Edge Conservation Award by the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club for significant contributions to conservation of the environment. Founded in 1890, the DVOC is the sixth oldest bird club worldwide. It is based at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.

The Fall 2010 Center for Ethics program, entitled "Science and Sensibility: Studying Nature as a Human Endeavor," was directed by Dr. Bruce Wightman, Professor of Biology.

Dr. Marten Edwards was awarded a Senior Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health to investigate Juvenile Hormone Synthesis in mosquitoes at a NIH-supported lab at  Florida International University, Miami, FL. Dr. Edwards presented the results of this research at an international meeting in the Czech Republic, Summer '10.

The Acopian Center for Ornithology (ACO) has recently received an anonymous gift of $50,000 to establish an endowment providing financial support for the Acopian Center at Muhlenberg College. Interest generated by the endowment will assist in the  purchase of archival supplies and will support expenses and activities related to the administration of archives, manuscripts and the collection.

BiologyAt the May 2010 commencement, Dr. Jeremy Teissere, Associate Professor of Biology and Director of the Neuroscience Program, was awarded the Paul C. Empie Memorial Award. This award is given each year to a faculty member whose teaching extends broadly beyond the classroom and is distinguished by a quest for meaning and value in learning.
